Mia Lechberger

Love Virtually

Mia Lechberger is Emmi Rothner’s friend and the proposed match through whom Emmi’s attempt to manage Leo Leike’s romantic life turns into a test of her own relationship with him. Introduced as a possible “dream woman,” Mia becomes more than a matchmaking device: she recognizes the constraints of Emmi’s plan and joins Leo in resisting them. Their brief connection does not become a romance, but it makes the difference between Emmi as an intimate presence in correspondence and a person in the physical world impossible to ignore.

Identity and Introduction

Emmi presents Mia as thirty-four, beautiful, single, and a gym teacher, describing her as intelligent, cheerful, enterprising, and well read. The introduction is upbeat and emphatic: Emmi imagines that the names Leo and Mia already sound promising together and asks whether she should introduce them. Her teasing description even makes a joke of Mia’s vegetarianism, suggesting that she could be persuaded to eat meat if it were called tofu. The portrait is Emmi’s sales pitch rather than Mia’s own account of herself; at this point Mia enters Leo’s story through her friend’s enthusiasm and his screen.

Emmi later reports that she has called Mia. Mia is willing in principle to meet Leo for coffee, but doubts that he genuinely wants to meet her and suspects Emmi is trying to pair her with someone. She also wants to know what he looks like. Emmi can offer only a qualified impression, since she has seen Leo’s sister rather than Leo himself. Mia’s initial skepticism thus exposes a practical gap in Emmi’s plan: Emmi is proposing a meeting between two people who have no direct knowledge of one another, and she cannot give Mia a reliable description of the man she is recommending.

The Meeting and Its Premise

Leo later explains that he and Mia first meet on a Sunday afternoon in a café. Both understand that they are there because of Emmi, not because their own attraction has drawn them together. They do not see themselves as a promising couple; instead, they feel like pieces Emmi has placed in a game whose rules neither of them understands. Mia’s admiration for Emmi adds another complication. Leo wonders why he should be told about the apparent perfection of Emmi’s family life, while Mia is left uncertain about her standing with her friend.

From the beginning, Mia treats Leo as someone Emmi has marked off-limits. She understands that Emmi expects her to listen to him and provide a detailed account of the physical person behind Leo’s emails. In effect, Mia is being asked to act as a bridge between the man Emmi cannot see and the imagined figure she has built from their correspondence. That expectation makes Mia an active observer of the arrangement, rather than an unaware participant in a straightforward blind date.

Leo and Mia’s Brief Relationship

Leo describes Mia as a physical presence in his immediate surroundings, in contrast with Emmi, whose piano he says has no place in his world because he has never encountered it directly. He can experience Mia as someone present beside him, while Emmi remains the heroine of his email novel. The distinction is not simply between two women competing for him: it is between an embodied encounter and a relationship sustained through written messages and imagination. Leo says he is grateful that his attempts to meet Emmi have repeatedly failed, because he can preserve the version of her he wants to see.

The first meeting with Mia begins, for Leo, partly as an act of defiance because Emmi has pushed him toward her. But he soon understands that Mia and Emmi occupy different kinds of relationship to him. He and Mia do not fall in love; nevertheless, they sleep together, agreeing that their choice is a way to resist the roles Emmi has assigned them. Leo says that the encounter brought them both some good and that they enjoyed one another’s company, while denying that it involved great passion or a lasting romantic attachment. Their connection lasts as a deliberate act within their shared protest, not as the start of a couple’s future.

Friendship, Conflict, and Significance

Mia’s connection to Emmi is important to the episode’s tension. Leo says Mia thinks highly of Emmi, admires her, and even envies her, yet Mia also feels unsure where she stands with her. The matchmaking places that friendship under strain: Emmi tries to use Mia to bring Leo closer to her own life, while also expecting Mia to report back about him. Mia and Leo recognize that they have been assigned parts in this arrangement and choose to make a separate choice of their own. Their defiance briefly reverses the direction of control, turning Emmi’s plan into something they can act against together.

That rebellion does not erase their regard for each other. Leo says that he and Mia liked one another, remain on good terms, and were glad to meet, even though their encounter did not make them a lasting couple. He also acknowledges that they kept Emmi at a distance as a small punishment for what they saw as her arrogance. The limit is explicit: one can sleep with another person against a third party only temporarily; a relationship has to be with the person who is actually present. Mia’s short-lived involvement with Leo therefore both frustrates Emmi’s matchmaking and clarifies its larger consequence. She is not the substitute for Emmi, but the real, present person whose contrast with Emmi’s imagined presence reveals how much the email relationship depends on remaining apart.
